Spurs' Victor Wembanyama Makes History, Joins Ewing, Mutombo After Block vs. Hawks
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is already well on his way to being the premier defender of his generation, and he joined an elite group of shot blockers on Friday.
Wembanyama rejected a pair of shots in a 126-98 win over the Atlanta Hawks, marking his 100th straight game with a block. The last time Wembanyama did not record a block in a game was Jan. 10, 2024, during his rookie season, per the Associated Press.
The only other players to record blocks in 100 consecutive games are Patrick Ewing (145 games) and Dikembe Mutombo (116).
The 7'4" Wembanyama has blocked shots at an exceptional rate through his first few seasons, averaging 3.6 blocks per game in his career. Last season, he led the NBA in total blocks (176) despite playing just 46 games.
So far this season, he has the second-most blocks in the NBA (51), even after missing 12 games.
Wembanyama will almost certainly end his career with multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards, but he's been great on both ends of the floor this year, putting up 25.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
The Spurs, who haven't made the playoffs since the 2018-19 campaign, are off to a 20-7 start this year, sitting in third place in the West.
