Jerry Jones Defends Role as Cowboys GM, Explains How It Creates 'Continuity' for Team
Jerry Jones feels maintaining his role as general manager is important for establishing "continuity" for the Dallas Cowboys in 2026.
Jones, who has served as the team's owner and general manager since 1989, spoke about continuing on in both roles during a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
"When you've got a new general manager, he's always thinking about, well, how about let's get a new coach, or let's get a new quarterback, or let's get a new tackle," Jones said. "And so, any time you can create continuity... any time that you start mitigating continuity, you're going to pay a price. That's not good, when you're turning it over."

The Cowboys fell to 6-7-1 on the season with last Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings. A loss by Dallas or win by the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend would eliminate Jones' team from playoff contention.
Jones has regularly stated throughout his time at the helm that he plans to remain the Cowboys' general manager going forward.
When asked last January if he planned to give up the GM title ahead of the 2025 season, Jones answered, "No. Just, no."
"I bought the team... and I didn't buy an investment," Jones said last January, per The Athletic's Saad Yousuf. "I bought an occupation, and I bought something I was going to do.
"I was 46. I bought something I was going to do for the rest of my life. That's what I'm doing. So, no. The facts are, since I have to decide where the money is spent, then you might as well cut all of the bulls--t out. That's who's making the call anyways."
Jones has a few major free agency decisions coming up with George Pickens and Javonte Williams both currently set to hit unrestricted free agency this winter.
The Cowobys GM said in his Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan he hoped Williams would remain "a Cowboy for a time to come," and has previously expressed interest in re-signing Pickens.
Both offensive stars could potentially be seeking significant raises, however, after leading the Cowboys respectively in rushing and receiving yards through Week 15.
How Jones manages those upcoming contract decisions could shape what his team's offense looks like around Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb next season.
For now, Jones has confirmed the Cowboys plan on playing their starters, regardless of the viability of the team's playoff hopes down the stretch, as the 2025 season winds down.
Following Sunday's matchup with the Chargers, the Cowboys are set to wrap up the regular season with a Christmas Day road game against the Washington Commanders followed by a Jan. 4 trip to take on the New York Giants.
