Jerry Jones 'Proud' of George Pickens, Updates Potential Cowboys Contract Extension

Julia StumbaughOct 14, 2025

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was highly complimentary of George Pickens when asked on 105.3 The Fan about the possibility of offering the wide receiver an extension this season.

"We are always look at what we can do to basically financially improve where we are," Jones said when asked about Pickens' next contract. "Now, you don't financially improve without getting what you paid for... We'll look carefully at what we'll do financially, look carefully at what we do there with George.

"I can't tell you how proud I am, personally, for George. Because he is absolutely, as exciting as he's been on the field, he's been that kind of teammate. And he's inspirational, our coaches have enjoyed coaching him."

Pickens, acquired via March trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is currently set to hit unrestricted free agency next spring.

The trade came after Pickens appeared to clash with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin during the 2024 season. At one point, Tomlin told reporters the wide receiver needed "to grow up" after receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a Week 13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

"Of course, when we got him, there was some issue with, 'Well, there might be something with his personality,'" Jones said Tuesday. "Well, I'll tell you this. I'll take that combination we've got with him any day."

Jones' comments came two days after Pickens recorded the most productive performance of his Cowboys career in a Week 6 loss at the Carolina Panthers.

The wide receiver led Dallas with nine catches for 168 yards and a touchdown, including a 45-yard catch on a game-tying drive in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys ultimately lost after the defense was unable to contain Rico Dowdle on the Panthers' game-winning field goal drive.

The outing still allowed Pickens to join the Seattle Seahawks' Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Los Angeles Rams' Puka Nacua as one of the only three wide receivers to top 500 receiving yards through the first six games of the season.

He is also tied with the Detroit Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown for the NFL lead with six receiving touchdowns heading into Week 7.

Pickens is likely to be a focal point in the Cowboys' game plan as the team prepares to take on the visiting Washington Commanders and their 23rd-ranked passing defense in Sunday's Week 7 matchup.

Jones, who seemingly expressed more hesitance before extending CeeDee Lamb or the now-traded Micah Parsons, sounds like he's already considering whether the former Steelers wideout will remain a key part of Dak Prescott's offense past the 2025 campaign.
