Will Cowboys Re-Sign Javonte Williams? Jerry Jones Sends Message on RB's Future

Julia StumbaughDec 19, 2025

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated Friday he is in favor of his team re-signing running back Javonte Williams ahead of the 2026 season.

"He's had an outstanding season from the get-go. He's been as solid as you could ever say the word, and he's been, if you will, dynamic," Jones said in a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan. "His all-around play, that certainly has been beneficial to us, the things that we've done really good. Again, he's been consistent.

"I love the way that he brings the wood, so to speak, when he runs. So I'm looking forward, hopefully, to him being a Cowboy for a time to come."

Williams is playing this season on a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cowboys. He is currently set to hit unrestricted free agency in 2026.

Williams is one of six running backs to have exceeded 1,100 rushing yards through Week 15.

His team-high 230 carries have been a major part of the reason the Cowboys went from ranking 27th in rushing yards per game last season to 15th so far in 2025.

Jones' praise of Williams comes after head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters he hoped to see the running back playing in Dallas for the long term.

"He's had a lot of carries this year, and doing a great job," Schottenheimer said Thursday. "Just the way he approaches the preparation, he's a guy who truly gets it, man. He understands that to be a great player you have to come to meetings ready to roll, be dialed in, ask questions, take great notes, go to walkthroughs... You see the work ethic, you see the maturity, you see the intelligence and then the talent. And, yeah, I hope he's a Cowboy for a long time."

When asked Thursday if he wanted to return to Dallas next season, Williams meanwhile told reporters he was focused on the three games remaining in the 2025 season.

"But yeah, I love it here," he added. "I love my teammates. I love everybody. So, I mean, we're just going to keep going there, and see how these last three games go."

When asked about how the Cowboys' success could influence his decision, Williams answered, "You don't always just want to follow money, or things like that. You want to go somewhere where you actually want to succeed, and be a part of something that's special. So, I feel like it's very special here."

The Cowboys need a win this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, coupled with an upset of the Philadelphia Eagles by the Washington Commanders, in order to stay in mathematical contention for the playoffs.

Williams could both help keep his team in the postseason picture and bolster his argument for a raise next season with another strong outing against the Bolts.
