Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson Discuss Potential of Warriors Reunion Amid NBA Rumors
Ahead of a Christmas Day showdown between the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson aren't ruling out the possibility of eventually playing together again before their legendary careers end.
Per ESPN's Anthony Slater and Tim MacMahon, Curry at least suggested the idea of Thompson signing a one-day contract with the Warriors when he decides to retire so he can end his career with the franchise he spent 13 years with.
Asked specifically about the possibility of rejoining the Warriors as a player for the final year of his career, whenever that is going to be, Thompson didn't want to try predicting anything that will happen.

"I don't know," Thompson told Slater and MacMahon. "That's a long ways away, man. That's a lot of basketball to be had. I don't know what the future holds."
Curry offered a similar response, though he did at least say he would be happy to call Thompson if the opportunity arises to let him know they would want him back in Golden State.
"It would be unbelievable," Curry said. "If that time comes and that conversation is had, of course I'm calling him and saying, 'We want you back.' And hopefully that would be a welcome message to him. But as we stand right now, that does seem like a far distant reality. But so did him leaving."
There had been rumblings for several years before Thompson's departure that things weren't copacetic with the Warriors. Head coach Steve Kerr admitted early in the 2022-23 season that Thompson wasn't happy with his playing time.
When the Warriors moved Thompson to a role off the bench late in the 2023-24 season, ESPN's Kendra Andrews reported Kerr told her the five-time All-Star initially responded to the decision by yelling at members of the coaching staff.
Andrews added Thompson later apologized to the coaches and he settled into the role.
After Thompson signed with the Mavs as a free agent in the summer of 2024, Andrews and Ramona Shelburne reported he spent most of his final season with the Warriors in a "miserable" state because he didn't feel "respected or valued" in the way that Curry and Draymond Green were.
While it's unclear if the feelings Thompson held for the Warriors organization and coaches at that time remain present, he did get a hero's welcome from the Chase Center crowd in his first game back as a visiting player on Nov. 12, 2024.
Thompson has one more year remaining on the three-year, $50 million contract he signed with the Mavs. He has been mentioned as a potential trade candidate if Dallas decides to make moves prior to the Feb. 5 deadline.
It would seem unlikely the Warriors would trade for him, but Curry's input could at least open an opportunity for Thompson to go back to the organization he helped win four NBA titles before putting a bow on his career.
