Giannis Trade Is Vital for Bucks' Long-Term Future Amid NBA Rumors

Erik BeastonDec 11, 2025

The Milwaukee Bucks have lost 10 of their last 12 games are currently 10th in the Eastern Conference and trade chatter surrounding star Giannis Antetokounmpo is dominating headlines more than anything taking place on the court.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported, "Should the Bucks' slide continue, sources said discussions between Antetokounmpo's representation and the franchise will escalate and lead to a resolution before the Feb. 5 trade deadline."

While the greatest fear of any fan is their favorite team trading their cornerstone, franchise player, it is vital for the Bucks' long-term future to consider that possibility regarding its former league MVP.

That is not to suggest that Antetokounmpo is not performing up to his superstar billing. He is averaging 28.9 points per game, 10.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and is shooting 63.9 percent from the floor.

Yet, despite his own personal dominance, the team is no better for it and they have not been since Milwaukee won the NBA title in 2021.

The Bucks have trended downward every season since, even as the front office has attempted to surround their franchise star with the talent necessary to get back to the finals and win a second championship.

The pairing of Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard did not work and thus far, neither has Giannis' partnership with center Myles Turner.

Beyond that is the team's lack of assets to build a team with for the foreseeable future. As Charania wrote, "Trying to build a contender around Antetokounmpo has left the Bucks with just one first-round pick eligible to be traded -- either in 2031 or 2032, the next drafts they can control -- and zero second-round picks eligible to be dealt."

There is no chance for the organization to build a team around its start that can realistically compete for a championship in a loaded Eastern Conference, against an even more loaded Western Conference, leaving it with no choice but to find potential suitors for the Greek-born player.

Getting players and, more importantly, draft picks in return for Antetokounmpo and protecting the long-term future of the franchise, so that it does not limp through Giannis' final seasons before providing fans nothing to look forward to beyond his eventual departure, is the right decision.

No matter how difficult it may seem for fans to watch a star they have passionately rooted for, having to endure years of losing because of a lack of depth or the ability to build through the draft, would be even worse.
