Smart's Blunt Game 1 Assessment
Powell hasn't had a huge role in Dallas in recent years, and he's putting up just 2.4 points per game while averaging just 10.9 minutes, but having a vet like him around is always valuable.
Powell began his career with the Boston Celtics, but played just five games before being traded to Dallas. So, outside of about a month with the Celtics, Powell has been with the Mavericks his entire career.
He's by far the longest-tenured member of the team, with the second-longest Mav being Kyrie Irving, who has only been in Dallas since 2022. In an era that sees players on the move all the time, Powell staying with the Mavericks for so long is a rare feat.
Being in Dallas so long also means he's seen plenty of different eras. He was around for the final years of Dirk Nowitzki and the early years of Luka Dončić. He has seen the lows of missing the postseason as well as the highs of reaching the NBA Finals in 2024.
Now, he's experiencing a new era in the post-Dončić world, and things haven't gone great so far. While the Mavs landed the top pick and used it to select Cooper Flagg, they're off to a rough 9-16 start and are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs.
Whether Dallas can turn things around remains to be seen, but it appears Powell will be around for at least another season.
