Every NFL Team's Nightmare Scenario in Final Weeks of 2026 Season
Here we are. All the byes are done, and every NFL team is staring at a final four-week stretch to wrap up what has been a wild 2025 season throughout the league.
It's been a dream year for many, a nightmare for others. That can still change for most.
Let's look at the nightmare scenarios that still remain for each of the 32.
AFC East

Buffalo Bills
Just when the Chiefs finally stop looking like the roadblock they've been, the Bills watch the Patriots reclaim the AFC East throne—and once again see their Super Bowl hopes derailed, this time by a road-heavy playoff path.
Miami Dolphins
Buoyed by a cushy schedule, they scrape their way into the playoffs—only to go one-and-done and sabotage their 2026 draft capital in the process.
New England Patriots
They're playing with house money with the rebuild so far ahead of schedule, so only a major injury to a key young player who could impact 2026 would constitute a Patriots nightmare at this stage.
New York Jets
Justin Fields returns from injury, performs well and gives the team the false impression he could be the solution at quarterback in 2026.
AFC North

Baltimore Ravens
Any result short of a playoff berth would be a nightmare for a Ravens team that has unexpectedly taken a considerable step backward thus far in 2026.
Cincinnati Bengals
For a team that is realistically toast for 2026, the only new nightmare that can come about would be an injury to a cornerstone player such as Joe Burrow or Ja'Marr Chase.
Cleveland Browns
The unlikely yet horrifying combination of Shedeur Sanders playing poorly (leaving them without much hope for a franchise quarterback) despite a surprise win or two down the stretch (costing them draft capital in the quest to find one).
Pittsburgh Steelers
This one's easy: A Week 18 home loss to the floundering Ravens costs them the division crown and a playoff spot.
AFC South

Houston Texans
Despite all of their momentum, a Week 18 home loss to the rival Colts costs them a playoff spot—especially if franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud struggles on that stage.
Indianapolis Colts
They've been living it since their Week 11 bye, so anything down this current path is a continued nightmare for a team that just lost its starting quarterback.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Despite all of their momentum, a Week 17 loss to the shorthanded Colts costs them the AFC South, especially if franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence struggles on that stage.
Tennessee Titans
They win multiple games in the final four weeks (perhaps beating the Saints and Jags) , sacrificing valuable draft capital in the process, all while showing little to no real progress from rookie quarterback Cam Ward.
AFC West

Denver Broncos
A struggling Bo Nix is exposed by tough and opportunistic defenses as the Broncos fall to the Packers, Jaguars and Chargers in each of their last three home games to blow the division (the nightmare worsens if they also lose to the Chiefs at Arrowhead, going 0-4 to close out the year).
Kansas City Chiefs
A team that is already 1-6 in one-score games this year loses in that fashion at home to the Chargers and/or Broncos to cement its first non-playoff campaign since 2014.
Las Vegas Raiders
Geno Smith returns from injury and plays just well enough to steal another win or two, knocking the Raiders out of the race for the No. 1 pick and tempting them to consider rolling into 2026 with a quarterback who's simply a waste of time.
Los Angeles Chargers
A thrilling and critical prime-time Week 14 win proves to be the peak of their 2025 season, as a terrifying home-stretch schedule sinks a team that still has significant deficiencies on both sides of the ball.
NFC East

Dallas Cowboys
Considering their schedule (Vikings and Chargers at home, Commanders and Giants on the road), anything short of a 4-0 finish would be a nightmare because it would almost certainly mean missing the playoffs for the second year in a row.
New York Giants
They win several games against a soft December schedule that includes matchups with the Commanders, Vikings and Raiders, costing them a primo pick in the 2026 draft.
Philadelphia Eagles
This one's pretty straightforward, and it involves them winning two fewer games than the Cowboys in the next four weeks—a development that would hand Dallas the division and likely leave the defending Super Bowl champions out of the playoffs entirely.
Washington Commanders
The nightmare is already active, and it can probably only be made worse by a major injury to a key player.
NFC North

Chicago Bears
Home losses to the Packers and Lions in Weeks 16 and 18, respectively, would probably cost the rising Bears a playoff spot and indicate to the football world that they still aren't on the same level as their more established NFC North rivals.
Detroit Lions
A mix of continued road struggles—especially with trips to the Rams, Vikings and Bears—and more late-season big-game faltering from Jared Goff would likely push the Lions into full-blown crisis mode.
Green Bay Packers
A late-season collapse to blow the division, especially if it involves a Week 16 loss to the Bears, and especially if it involves a continued lack of consistency from quarterback Jordan Love.
Minnesota Vikings
J.J. McCarthy reinforces the notion that he isn't the answer at quarterback, but the Vikings pull off another win or two anyway, costing them significant draft capital.
NFC South

Atlanta Falcons
Considering they're out of contention, lack a first-round pick and are without their potential franchise quarterback, only a major injury to a core piece of their 2026 plan would deepen the current nightmare in Atlanta.
Carolina Panthers
While a late-season meltdown to miss the playoffs wouldn't be a major surprise for such a raw team, having that collapse driven by poor play from Bryce Young would be the true nightmare.
New Orleans Saints
More of what happened Sunday in Tampa—the schedule paves the way, as they play the Panthers, Jets, Titans and Falcons to close out the season—which would cost a rebuilding team major draft capital.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Go 0-2 in a pair of head-to-head matchups with the Panthers and automatically miss the playoffs, potentially signaling the end of an era in Tampa.
NFC West

Arizona Cardinals
They're already deep into their nightmare, but an accidental win or two (they play Atlanta and Cincinnati later in December) could worsen it by depriving them of a primo draft pick as well.
Los Angeles Rams
Losses to Detroit and Seattle over the next two weeks would mean a 1-3 stretch in a key period for the Rams, and it could cost them a division title despite a 9-2 start.
San Francisco 49ers
Another major injury to a central piece would all but cement the nightmare for a San Francisco team already fighting to stay upright amid the damage.
Seattle Seahawks
Losses to the Rams and 49ers down the stretch to fall out of the Super Bowl contender circle would hurt, and if those stem from turnover-plagued performances from Sam Darnold it would become a nightmare in Seattle.
