Giannis Trade Rumors Discussed by NBA Insider, 'The Writing Is on the Wall'

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been with the Milwaukee Bucks his entire career, but it is just a matter of time before that changes in the eyes of one NBA insider.

"The writing is on the wall," someone with knowledge of the Milwaukee Bucks told ESPN's Shams Charania when discussing an eventual trade.

Charania noted Tuesday that Antetokounmpo and his representation are discussing the future and whether there will be a trade with the Bucks. The plan is to come to a resolution prior to the Feb. 5 trade deadline, and continued poor play from Milwaukee may lead to an actual deal.

The team is just 10-15 and in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings. Things might also get worse in the immediate future, as Antetokounmpo is sidelined with a right calf strain.

The front office could shift its focus to the future and trade him for a number of draft picks and younger players, especially after going all-in so much in recent years it has just one first-round pick eligible to be traded.

However, the star will likely have to be involved in any such discussions.

"Antetokounmpo's contract status—he's guaranteed through the 2026-27 season and has a player option for 2027-28—gives him significant sway in his future destination," Charania reported. "Executives believe the NBA's new apron rules, combined with his maximum salary and supermax extension to come, make a trade difficult and would require him to show a desire to sign long term with the team that deals for him. That gives him a seat at the table for his future."

Whichever team trades for Antetokounmpo will be going all-in on its own immediate future, as it will surely take quite the trade package to land the future Hall of Famer.

The 31-year-old is one of the best players of his generation with a resume that includes a championship, NBA Finals MVP, two league MVPs, a Defensive Player of the Year and nine All-NBA selections. He is on the short list of players that would dramatically raise the ceiling for any team just with his presence on the court.

It might be strange for NBA fans to see him playing in a different uniform later this season, but it seems like that possibility is becoming more of a likelihood as long as the Bucks continue to struggle.
