Julia StumbaughDec 6, 2025

There is likely to be a new top team in men's college basketball next week.

No. 1 Purdue lost 81-58 to No. 10 Iowa State at home on Saturday in argaubly the biggest upset of the 2025-26 men's season so far.

The Boilermakers had gone 35-0 in non-conference games over the last six years prior to Saturday's loss, per ESPN's Jeff Borzello.

No. 4 Duke could be in contention for the top spot after Cameron Boozer and the Blue Devils held on for a 66-60 win over No. 7 Michigan State at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

Boozer, the potential top pick in the 2026 NBA draft, contributed 18 points and 15 rebounds in the win.

The Blue Devils now have claimed three straight victories over ranked opponents in Arkansas, Florida and MSU.

Michigan State, which climbed four AP poll spots to No. 7 last week, could remain in the top 10 after the close loss. Iowa State will continue rising after jumping five spots to No. 10 last week.

Which team ends up in the No. 1 slot, however, could depend on how the rest of Saturday's games pan out.

Some fans made the case for Arizona to take the top spot following the Wildcats' 7-0 start to the season.

The Wildcats have defeated three ranked teams this fall, including a pair of top-three opponents in Florida and UConn.

Those victories starred point guard Jaden Bradley and power forward Koa Peat, who are combining for almost 30 points per game so far this season.

Others campaigned for Michigan to take the No. 1 slot. The Wolverines are coming off back-to-back wins over ranked opponents in Auburn and Gonzaga.

Michigan is being led this season by forward Yaxel Lendeborg, who is coming off a 20-point performance in the Wolverines' blowout win over the Bulldogs.

The Wolverines would need to beat 5-4 Rutgers Saturday afternoon in order to keep their campaign for the No. 1 spot alive.

Arizona could make a convincing case for the top spot with a Saturday night victory over No. 20 Auburn.

With Purdue about to slip down the standings and Duke making its case to rise, the results of the Michigan-Rutgers and Arizona-Auburn matchups could impact which team comes out at No. 1 when the next AP Top 25 rankings are released Monday afternoon.
