Why Giannis Trade Has to Happen Now as Bucks Look to Unlock Future Amid NBA Rumors

Erik BeastonDec 5, 2025

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been the face of the Milwaukee Bucks for nearly a decade, delivering the team an NBA Championship in 2021 while developing into one of the most dominant players in the league. Amid three consecutive first-round playoff exits and a 10-13 start to the 2025-26 season, though, the two-time MVP could be nearing his exit from the only team he has known.

ESPN's Shams Charania wrote that Antetokounmpo "and his agent, Alex Saratsis, are having conversations with the Milwaukee Bucks about the two-time NBA MVP's future -- and discussing whether his best fit is staying or a move elsewhere, sources told ESPN on Wednesday."

Charania's ESPN college Jamal Collier added, "Sources from several teams told ESPN they were meeting soon to discuss a potential trade package for Antetokounmpo, targeting Dec. 15, when players across the league who signed this past offseason can be moved."

This comes on the heels of a report from the New York Post's Matt Ehalt and Stefan Bondy that the New York Knicks are the only team the forward wants to play for and that the two teams discussed a trade last off-season.

While it may be difficult to imagine Giannis suiting up for any team other than Milwaukee, the two sides must consider it for each of their long-term futures.

For the player, a trade brings the opportunity to win and, potentially, add another NBA Championship to his resume. The Bucks, despite his All-Star play, have trended downward since their title win four seasons ago, failing to get back to the promised land even once the front office brought in Damian Lillard to partner with its superstar.

Thus far in the 2025-26 season, the 30-year-old is averaging 28 points, 10.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 63.9 percent from the floor for a team that has been sub-par, at best. His talents are almost wasted at this point, for a team that has not consistently provided him enough support.

Speaking of the team, it must look at its own long-term future and decide what makes the most sense in its pursuit of championships and league relevance.

Its star is 30 and despite his strong stat line, has not been able to get over that first-round hump in three years, and it appears he will struggle to get the Bucks to the postseason this year. Add to that the non-contact calf injury suffered on Wednesday against Detroit, and you have even more reason to re-evaluate things.

That Antetokounmpo is only under team control for one more full season before his player option kicks in, and the team has even more reason to consider a trade now, while he is still performing at his current level.

Whether it is the Knicks or any other contending team that comes out of the woodwork for a shot at acquiring a player who, based on his physical abilities and statistics over the last five or six season is a generation talent, the Bucks and Giannis owe it to themselves individually to talk things out and work on finding a trade partner that allows them to go their separate ways and ensure they each have rewarding futures.

Whether Milwaukee can find a trade partner willing to give up the haul they will ask in return, while also paying the big man the max contract to keep him around long-term and make the transaction worthwhile at all, is an entirely other question.
