Aidan Hutchinson Explains Signing Lions Contract Below Micah Parsons' Historic Deal
Aidan Hutchinson wanted to receive a fair deal from the Detroit Lions but wasn't determined to set a new record when he signed his $180 million extension.
Hutchinson's $45 million puts him a close second to the Green Bay Packers' Micah Parsons ($46.5 million) among the highest-paid edge-rushers.
The 2023 Pro Bowler told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Eric Woodyard he understood his contract doesn't exist in a vacuum. He balanced that against his desire to stay in the Motor City.

NFL Not Investigating Mike Vrabel
"There's a lot of factors that went into it, but ultimately, I know I wanted to be in Detroit and that was the goal," he said. "Obviously, as a player, you have a responsibility when you're in the echelon of players that I'm in to continue to push the market up, but was it at the expense of continuing to draw this process out and try to get an extra $1 [million] or $2 [million] or get above Micah or whatever it was.
"To me, it was important that we got it done and I was here. That was kind of the priority."
Parsons reset the market in a big way when he ensured he'd be sticking around in Green Bay for a while following his trade from the Dallas Cowboys. His annual salary comfortably surpassed that of the Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt ($41 million) and Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett ($40 million).
It's only a matter of time before another decorated sack artist knocks Parsons off from the top spot.
If he had waited until after the 2025 season, Hutchinson might've done just that. Through 11 games, he has 8.5 sacks and an NFL-high four forced fumbles. He sealed last Sunday's 34-27 win over the New York Giants by sacking Jameis Winston on the final play.
Right now, Hutchinson's resume doesn't match up with those of Parsons, Garrett or Watt, though. All three are multi-time All-Pros, while Garrett and Watt have been named the Defensive Player of the Year before.
Hutchinson was also limited to five games in 2024 after fracturing his tibia and fibula, which didn't help his leverage at the negotiating table.
All things considered, the 25-year-old did pretty well for himself and may not have left much money on the table.
