The official listing from on SCP's website notes three different photo-matching firms were able to authenticate it because each individual "pinstripe jersey holds clues which lend itself to modern photo-matching techniques."
TMZ noted the jersey is believed to be one that Gehrig wore in Game 2 of the 1937 World Series against the New York Giants. He hit .294/.455/.647 with three extra-base hits in the five-game series.
The jersey is also the same one Gehrig wore for his official Yankees portrait for that season.
The 1937 season was the final year Gehrig played before experiencing symptoms of ALS. He wasn't formally diagnosed with the disease until June 1939, but MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince noted the Yankees legend told a sportswriter he first knew something was wrong in the spring of 1938.
Gehrig hit .351/.473/.643 with 29 home runs in 157 games during the '37 campaign. He was named to the All-Star team for the fifth consecutive year and finished fourth in AL MVP voting.
The auction runs through Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET.
