Will Giants Fire Joe Schoen? Latest Rumors on GM amid HC Search After Daboll's Firing

Adam WellsNov 20, 2025

Despite the recent firing of Brian Daboll as head coach, the New York Giants appear inclined to retain Joe Schoen as their general manager for the 2026 season.

Per ESPN's Jordan Raanan, multiple people within the NFL who have spoken to the Giants "believe" Schoen is likely going to keep his job "unless there is a strong head coaching candidate who wants to bring in his own general manager."

When the Giants announced Daboll's firing on Nov. 10, it was accompanied by a note from owner John Mara that Schoen would help lead their search for a new head coach.

That would certainly seem to indicate Schoen remains in good standing with the Giants.

As Raanan wrote, it would seem "unlikely" that whomever the Giants hire as their head coach would want to bring in their own general manager since Schoen is the one who will be building out the list of candidates.

It's not uncommon for a head coach and general manager to be on separate timelines, but this would seem like an opportunity for the Giants to get a fresh start if they wanted one.

Among the reasons Raanan pointed out that Schoen appears to be safe is Giants ownership likes the core they have in place thanks to his trades and draft picks. The group of talent includes Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers, Cam Skattebo, Abdul Carter, Andrew Thomas and Brian Burns.

One thing that could tell us how the Giants really feel about Schoen, even if they retain him after this season, is their handling of his contract since he is only signed through 2026.

The Giants hired Schoen and Daboll in January 2022. Their first season was a huge success with a playoff appearance and a victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round.

Since the start of the 2023 season, though, the Giants have the second-worst record in the NFL (11-34). They are 2-9 through 11 games this season, including a five game losing streak entering Sunday's matchup with the Detroit Lions.
