Arafan Diane Commits to Houston, What You Need to Know on 5-Star's Scouting Report
Houston men's basketball has landed a 5-star class of 2026 prospect after center Arafan Diane committed to the Cougars, per comments made to ESPN's Paul Biancardi and Jeff Borzello.
The 7'1", 290-pound Diane plays for Iowa United Prep. The latest 247Sports Composite class of 2026 prospect list ranks Diane 13th overall and first among centers.
Diane visited Houston, Indiana, Arkansas, Kentucky and Virginia before choosing the Cougars.

Diane specifically mentioned head coach Kelvin Sampson as a reason why he chose Houston, which is off to a 4-0 start and sits No. 2 in the latest Associated Press poll.
"Coach Sampson is different," Diane told ESPN. "He pushes you hard with tough love. Off the court, he has strong family values and cares about his players. He is the best defensive coach in the country. He values winning like I do."
Per ESPN, Houston was considered the favorite for Diane before he visited all five schools this fall. In the end, Houston was the winner.
"He and his staff recruited me hard," Diane told ESPN. "I spoke with Coach Sampson every Sunday and he texted me after games. They have been to my school many times and that meant a lot to me. The fans and the facility are great, too."
In a July 13, 2025 scouting report, 247Sports' Adam Finkelstein raved about his physicality as well as some other traits, writing in part:
"Diane is arguably the most physically dominant big man in the national class. At 7-foot-1 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan and near 300-pound frame, he's big and powerful from head to toe with tree trunk legs and a broad upper body. He's immovable in the post, very hard for opposing defenders to get around, and also has good hands.
"Not only is he looking to hammer emphatic dunks whenever possible, but he also has some natural touch and skill. He can step out and show some shooting potential, with a very high – virtually unblockable, release (5-9 from 3pt in 3SSB play & 71% FT). He also sets a big screen, so he's a good pick-and-roll partner for his guards."
Diane is originally from Guinea, located in West Africa. He left home to pursue basketball dreams five years ago, as noted by Sam Lance of Hoops HQ.
Alexandre Victor, who has coached Diane for five years first with Dynastie Prep and then Iowa United, raved about Diane in an interview with Lance.
"He has the size," Victor said. "He has the strength. He has the court vision. He sees the open man. He can pass the ball. He can play high-low. He can stretch the floor now. He shoots threes. If you put someone that's as big as him, the footwork is there as well. So to me, the closest thing to him, and when we first got him people were saying baby Shaq, but I think Jokic is more accurate. He has a complete game and now we're starting to give him the freedom to bring the ball up the court when he gets a rebound."
Victor also noted Diane's team-first mentality.
"He wants to win," Victor said. "A lot of coaches say it's not about the name on the back of your jersey, it's about the name on the front. Like, when he gets on the court, he doesn't care if he scores, if he doesn't score. He wants to win. He's obsessed with winning."
Houston appears to be getting a fantastic prospect in Diane, who should help keep the Cougars in the conversation for a national title when he arrives on campus next year.
