'Multiple' Eagles Players Reportedly Frustrated with Jalen Hurts' 'Hesitant' Approach
Quarterback Jalen Hurts is the reigning Super Bowl MVP, but that reportedly hasn't made him immune to drawing the ire of some of his Philadelphia Eagles teammates this season.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, "multiple offensive players have grown frustrated with Jalen Hurts' approach this season, particularly against zone coverage."
Russini continued by writing, "They believe he's become hesitant in tight windows, leaning on checkdowns or scrambles instead of trusting what's open downfield."
At 7-2, the Eagles have the best record in the NFC, and they look to be Super Bowl contenders once again after beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl last season.
However, they have been fairly pedestrian offensively, ranking 23rd in total offense with 303.2 total yards per game and 12th in scoring with 24.2 points per game.
Philly is also 25th in passing with 191.7 yards per game, and it hasn't dominated on the ground to make up for it.
While the Eagles were the No. 2 rushing team in the league last season on the strength of Saquon Barkley eclipsing the 2,000-yard mark, they are just 21st so far this season.
Hurts has limited mistakes, throwing just one interception compared to 16 touchdowns, but he is also only 18th in the NFL in passing yardage with 1,860.
That has been enough to support wide receiver DeVonta Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert, who are both having solid statistical years, but three-time Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Brown is struggling through the worst year of his career.
Brown had over 1,400 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons with the Eagles and over 1,000 in each of his first three, but through eight games this season, he has just 31 catches for 408 yards and three touchdowns.
He has had fewer than 50 yards in five games this season, including last week when he had two grabs for 13 yards in the Eagles' 10-7 win over the Green Bay Packers.
Following that game, Brown said on a stream with Janky Rondo (h/t Eagles Nation) that this season has been a "s--t show."
Brown offered some advice to fantasy football managers who have him on their team, saying, "Get rid of me."
While it hasn't been uncommon over the past couple of years for Brown to voice his displeasure either cryptically or explicitly, doing it at this point in the season with the Eagles in title contention is a potential cause for concern.
Hurts is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, which is a distinction that can never be taken away from him, but there is little doubt that he benefited from a nearly perfect environment last season.
Barkley had one of the best seasons ever by a running back, and the defense was dominant at times, particularly during the Super Bowl when the pass-rush disrupted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes throughout.
This season, Barkley and the defense have not performed at that level, which suggests the Eagles may need more out of Hurts come playoff time in order to repeat as champions.
