5 Trade Landing Spots for Flames Center Nazem Kadri Amid NHL Rumors
The Calgary Flames narrowly missed qualifying for the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs. That performance raised expectations among their fans that they could become a serious postseason contender this season.
However, the Flames find themselves at the bottom of the NHL standings one month into the season. That has sparked speculation that they could become sellers.
Nazem Kadri has frequently appeared in the early-season rumor mill. Since the summer of 2024, the 35-year-old has been the focus of media-driven trade speculation. A talented, agitating two-way center, he's a former Stanley Cup champion who tallied a career-high 35 goals last season.
Kadri celebrated his 1,000th career NHL game in a 5-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 5. He is signed through 2028-29 with an average annual value of $7 million. He also carries a 13-team no-trade list.
Despite the Flames' lowly spot in the standings, they're not ready to become sellers. TSN's Darren Dreger said there's plenty of interest in Kadri, but he won't be moved unless the Flames decide to rebuild.
The Flames aren't in any rush to move Kadri, and he hasn't requested a trade. Nevertheless, the frequency of his appearance in the rumor mill prompted us to examine his value in the trade market and which teams might pursue him if he became available.
What Is Nazem Kadri's Trade Value?
1 of 7
Now in his 17th NHL season, Nazem Kadri has a well-earned reputation as a point-producing center whose agitating style can drive opponents to distraction. His antics earned him six suspensions earlier in his career. Since 2021, he has reined in his temper, becoming a more effective performer.
The change in his temperament was likely due to his solid performance in helping the Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022. Since joining the Flames as a free agent later that year, he's become one of their top offensive stars and a reliable veteran leader.
Kadri's production has remained consistent through most of his career. He's tallied 20-or-more goals seven times in his career, including 35 last season. He also reached or exceeded 40 points in 10 seasons, which included his 67 points in 2024-25.
At 35, he is at a point in his career where age and the wear and tear of a long NHL career could catch up with him. So far, he's avoided that decline, leading the struggling Flames with 11 points in 15 games, putting him on pace for another 20-goal, 60-point campaign.
Teams in the market for second-line center depth will be interested in Kadri's scoring, grit, and playoff experience. While there is cost certainty with his contract, his age could make some teams wary of taking on those remaining three years.
The Flames could seek a first-round pick and either a top prospect or a young NHL player as their asking price for Kadri. Interested teams could counter with a second-rounder and a prospect. Calgary's chances of getting the return it wants depend on how many teams bid for his services.
Honorable Mention

Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres must find a healthy replacement for the sidelined Josh Norris on their second line. They're also close to Kadri's hometown of London, Ontario. However, they currently have $1.6 million in cap space, and he could be reluctant to join a struggling franchise that hasn't made the playoffs in 14 years.
Chicago Blackhawks. With over $18 million in salary-cap space, they could afford Kadri's contract if they wanted to add more experience at center. However, this rebuilding club could be among the 13 teams on his no-trade list, and they could be unwilling to take on his full $7 million annual cap hit.
Colorado Avalanche. Kadri helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup, so it's natural to assume they'd welcome him back. However, they acquired Brock Nelson last season to fill their second-line center role. They also lack the cap space for Kadri's contract, especially with Cale Makar due for a big raise after next season.
Florida Panthers. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions need a first-line replacement for sidelined center Aleksander Barkov following his season-ending knee surgery. While the Panthers have a reputation for bold moves, they currently lack the cap space to take on Kadri's contract.
Toronto Maple Leafs. Kadri began his NHL career with the Maple Leafs. TSN's Darren Dreger believes they're among the teams that could envision adding the veteran to their rosters. However, they lack sufficient cap space and tradeable assets to tempt the Flames.
Carolina Hurricanes

Having come up short in two of the last three Eastern Conference Finals, the Carolina Hurricanes are in "go-for-it" mode this season.
General manager Eric Tulsky has a reputation for making big moves after last season's blockbuster deals involving Mikko Rantanen, and he could be eyeing another major trade this season.
Tulsky could be waiting to pounce if a superstar becomes available. However, if no such deal can be found, he could pursue a reliable second-tier talent such as Kadri. His agitating style would bring some welcome grit to their lineup, and his Stanley Cup experience could be invaluable.
The Hurricanes currently have over $8.5 million in cap space and will accrue much more between now and the March trade deadline. They can afford to take on the remainder of Kadri's contract at any time. They also possess young assets on their roster and within their system that could be tempting for the Flames.
Kadri could slot in on the Hurricanes' second line, which would move the versatile Logan Stankoven to the wing. He could also be insurance in case Stankoven or team captain Jordan Staal becomes sidelined or hampered by injuries.
Detroit Red Wings

After nine seasons outside the playoff picture, the Detroit Red Wings entered this season facing doubts and criticism from fans and pundits.
However, they've silenced their critics thus far with a strong start to this season, putting them near the top of the Eastern Conference.
Nevertheless, their second-line center position is a concern. Promising Marco Kasper is struggling with just three goals in 14 games. If this persists, they'll have to find a suitable solution or risk this weakness potentially derailing their postseason hopes.
Kadri could be an option. With over $15 million in cap space, they can easily afford to add his contract. They also have the advantage of being close to his hometown of London, Ontario. The Wings have no issue with adding aging stars, having taken on Patrick Kane since 2023-24.
The Red Wings also have some promising talent on their roster and in their system to trade. Combine with their cap space, they could outbid other interested clubs if they're not on his no-trade list.
Minnesota Wild

Having re-signed superstar Kirill Kaprizov in September to an eight-year extension, the Minnesota Wild entered this season looking to solidify their place as a Western Conference playoff contender. However, they find themselves near the bottom of the conference standings a month into this season.
General manager Bill Guerin could turn to the trade market for help. According to Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco, sources said he was looking for a forward to bring some scoring punch to his middle-six forward lines.
DiMarco suggested Kadri among the possible trade targets for the Wild. He could slot in as their third-line center, or they could move him up to the second line and shift two-way specialist Joel Eriksson Ek to the third line.
The Wild currently have $4.4 million in cap space, meaning they'll have to move out some salary or have the Flames retain part of Kadri's. They could wait until later in the season when they've accrued more, but that could be too late to help them.
Montréal Canadiens
6 of 7
Having emerged as a playoff wild-card club last season, the Montréal Canadiens hope to build on that performance and finish much higher in the standings. They're currently jockeying for first place in the Eastern Conference.
An area of concern remains their need for an experienced second-line center. They've made do thus far with Kirby Dach and the promising Oliver Kapanen. However, they could seek a more established center with playoff experience, grit, and a reliable scoring touch.
The Canadiens tend to acquire younger players who would fit into their long-term plans. Kadri's age would make him the oldest player on their roster, while his contract would make him among their highest-paid. However, he could be the only suitable option available to them.
With $5.7 million in cap space that accrues to $21.8 million by the trade deadline, the Canadiens can afford the remainder of Kadri's salary for this season if they acquire him between January and March. They also have depth in promising young players and prospects to make a suitable offer to the Flames.
Vancouver Canucks
7 of 7
Since trading away J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers last January, the Vancouver Canucks have struggled to fill the void at center on their second line. That need became pressing when oft-injured Filip Chytil was sidelined with another suspected concussion.
The Canucks and Flames have a recent trade history, with the former acquiring Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov from Calgary during the 2023-24 season. Those players were pending free agents, and the Flames might be wary about sending Kadri to a division rival for the next three seasons.
However, the Canucks also have limited salary-cap space this season. Any deal involving Kadri would require the Flames to retain part of his cap hit, while Vancouver would have to shed some salary.
Nevertheless, some pundits have suggested the Canucks as a landing spot. TSN's Darren Dreger included them among his list of clubs that could envision Kadri in their lineup. Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco cited two NHL sources who suggested the Canucks as a likely destination.
