Breece Hall Trade Reportedly Pursued by Chiefs, Details on NFL Deadline Talks Revealed
The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly made a push for New York Jets running back Breece Hall before talks broke down Tuesday on NFL trade deadline day.
According to ESPN's Nate Taylor, the Chiefs offered the Jets a 2026 fourth-round draft pick for Hall, but the Jets held firm in asking for a 2026 third-round pick instead.
Taylor noted that a team source told him the Chiefs felt using the third-round pick on a player with four years of team control was more valuable than eight games of Hall before he becomes an unrestricted free agent during the offseason.
With a 1-7 record, the Jets were big-time sellers at the deadline, sending two-time First Team All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for two first-round picks and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, and one-time First Team All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a first-round pick, a second-round pick and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
There were plenty of rumblings about Hall getting moved as well, and a source told Taylor that Hall wanted to get traded after Gardner and Williams were dealt.
Nothing came to fruition, though, and Jets head coach Aaron Glenn suggested afterward that it was due, in part, to his desire to keep Hall, telling reporters, "I think I've said this a million times over and over: Breece was not a guy I wanted to get rid of. I mean, he's a damn good player."
Hall, 24, has been among the lone bright spots for the struggling Jets this season, rushing for 581 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching 21 passes for 178 yards through eight games.
He is trending toward his first career 1,000-yard rushing season and his third consecutive year with at least 1,300 total yards.
That level of production would have been a welcomed sight in a Chiefs backfield that hasn't provided much consistency this season.
Isiah Pacheco is the Chiefs' leading rusher with just 329 yards and one touchdown in eight games, followed by veteran Kareem Hunt, who has rushed for 294 yards and five scores.
A strong argument can be made that quarterback Patrick Mahomes has provided KC with its most effective ground game, rushing for 285 yards and four touchdowns, and averaging 6.1 yards per carry.
Pacheco set career highs in 2023 with 935 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, while averaging 4.6 yards per tote. However, he seemingly hasn't been the same since fracturing his fibula last season.
The 2022 seventh-round pick averaged a career-low 3.7 yards per carry and scored only one touchdown in seven games last season, and so far this season, he is averaging 4.2 yards per carry with two total touchdowns.
Pacheco missed last week's loss to the Buffalo Bills due to a knee injury, but Taylor reported Thursday that the Chiefs are "optimistic" he will be able to return to the lineup after the bye.
Kansas City doesn't play again until it goes on the road to face the AFC West rival Denver Broncos on Nov. 16, giving Pacheco some extra time to heal up.
However, even if Pacheco is healthy, it is fair to wonder if the Chiefs' lack of a consistent running game is something that could cost them as they attempt to overcome a shaky 5-4 start and reach the playoffs.
