Marcus Jones, Patriots Reportedly Agree 3-Year Contract Extension amid NFL Breakout

Adam WellsOct 28, 2025

Cornerback Marcus Jones, who has played a huge role in the surprise success for the New England Patriots this season, has received a new contract from the club.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Jones agreed to a three-year, $36 million extension with the Patriots that will keep him under contract through the 2028 season.

A third-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Jones immediately established his value on special teams. He was named to the All-Pro first team as a punt returner.

Jones led the league in punt return yards (362) and yards per return (12.5) as a rookie.

A shoulder injury ended Jones' second season after just two games. He rebounded in 2024, appearing in 14 games and making a career-high nine starts on defense. His value in the return game remained strong, as he finished third in total punt return yards (386) and yards per return (14.8).

In addition to his work on special teams, Jones also played well on defense with 10 passes defensed and two fumble recoveries.

Through eight games in 2025, Jones' game has gone to another level. The 27-year-old is roughly in line with players like Christian Gonzalez and Quinyon Mitchell in yards allowed per coverage snap and passer rating allowed when targeted.

Jones has already tied his career-high with two interceptions and is one pass breakup away from matching his 2024 total. He also helped stabilize New England's secondary when Gonzalez missed the first three games due to a hamstring injury.

The Houston alum is also in the midst of his best season as a punt returner. His 21.6 yards per return is more than six yards ahead of anyone else.

Jones was playing on the final season of his rookie deal with a base salary of $1.4 million. He also entered the NFL as an older player at 24, so this extension gives him security and the Patriots the comfort of knowing a key player on both defense and special teams is under contract for an extended period of time.

The Patriots have been one of the league's most pleasant surprises this season. They are in first place in the AFC East with a 6-2 record going into Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. This is the latest into a season they have had a winning record since 2022.
