Daniel Jones, Colts Reportedly Haven't Discussed Contract Extension Amid Strong Play
Despite a hot start to the season, the Indianapolis Colts and quarterback Daniel Jones haven't yet discussed a contract extension, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
After getting cut by the New York Giants last season and spending some time as a backup with the Minnesota Vikings, Jones signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts during the offseason.
Jones beat out 2023 No. 4 overall pick Anthony Richardson for the Colts' starting job during the preseason, and it has proved to be a great decision on the part of head coach Shane Steichen, as Indy has the best record in the league at 6-1.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
The 28-year-old Jones has the Indianapolis offense firing on all cylinders, as the Colts lead the league with 33.1 points per game and are second in total offense with 380.3 yards per contest.
Jones is completing a career-best 71.0 percent of his passes for 1,790 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions, while also rushing for 83 yards and four scores.
Originally the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft out of Duke, Jones enjoyed a breakout year with the Giants in 2022.
At the time, he set new career marks by completing 67.2 percent of his passing attempts and passing for 3,205 yards. He also threw 15 touchdowns to just five interceptions, and rushed for 708 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Giants were the surprise team of the NFL that season, as they went 9-7-1, reached the playoffs and even won a postseason game.
That prompted the Giants to sign Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract extension, but it was all downhill from there for both Jones and the team as a whole.
Amid injuries and ineffectiveness, Jones started a total 16 games over the next two seasons, posting a 3-13 record, and throwing 10 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions.
When the Giants cut Jones during the 2024 season, it was fair to wonder if his days as an NFL starting quarterback were over, but his career has been revitalized in Indianapolis.
Jones still has to prove he can get the job done with the Colts over the course of a full season and in the playoffs, which could be why the organization hasn't opened contract talks yet.
If Jones keeps this up, he figures to be a hot commodity in free agency during the offseason, much like Sam Darnold was after his breakout 2024 campaign with the Minnesota Vikings before signing with the Seattle Seahawks.
Jones and the Colts seem to be a great fit for each other, which suggests the odds are in favor of them getting something done, but even if they don't, Jones is positioning himself for a huge payday in free agency.
