NFL Insiders Reportedly Think Aaron Rodgers Could Keep Playing Beyond 2025 Season

Scott PolacekOct 23, 2025

Aaron Rodgers turns 42 years old in December and is playing on a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that reportedly doesn't mean he is guaranteed to retire after the 2025 campaign.

"Since the season got going, sources around the league have insisted with me that if this keeps up, it won't be Rodgers' last season," Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported Thursday.

The report is notable since Rodgers himself told reporters during the summer, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is it. That's why we just did a one-year deal."

At the time of those comments, the future Hall of Famer was coming off a two-year stretch with the New York Jets that was defined by disappointment. He suffered an Achilles injury in his first game in 2023 and then went 5-12 as a starter while finishing 25th in the league in QBR in 2024.

New York didn't bring him back, and the end of his career seemed closer than ever.

However, Rodgers is 4-2 as a starter for the Steelers and has completed 68.6 percent of his passes for 1,270 yards, 14 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He may not be the dominant MVP candidate he was during his peak on the Green Bay Packers, but he looks much better now that he is more than a full season removed from his Achilles injury.

Rodgers and DK Metcalf seem to have an obvious chemistry, and the Steelers don't exactly have a surefire succession plan like the Packers did when they selected Jordan Love in the first round when the veteran was still in Green Bay.

Mason Rudolph was just 1-4 as a starter for the Tennessee Titans last season, and Will Howard was a sixth-round draft pick who is just working his way back from injury. If Rodgers decides he wants to play again in 2026, Pittsburgh is in a position where it could very well be happy with that.

For now, though, he is focused on attempting to lead the team to an AFC North title.
