Woody Johnson Hugs Aaron Glenn 'Every Day' to Show Support, Jets HC Has 'No BS'

Adam WellsOct 21, 2025

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson's faith in first-year head coach Aaron Glenn hasn't wavered despite their struggles so far this season.

Johnson told reporters on Tuesday amid the Jets' 0-7 start that "I do believe in" Glenn as the head coach and praises him because "there's no BS" in his approach.

Expectations were understandably muted for the Jets coming into this season anyway, yet they have somehow failed to even hit that bar through seven games. They got off to a promising start offensively with 32 points and 394 total yards in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the defense didn't hold up its end of the bargain by allowing 34 points.

Since that game, though, the Jets have looked inept on both sides of the ball. They are averaging 16.2 points and 250.8 yards per game over the past six weeks, including a total of 17 points scored in their last two games.

There have also been questions about Glenn's handling of the quarterback situation. He didn't seem interested in making a change when asked about moving off Justin Fields on Oct. 13, one day after the Jets had minus-10 net passing yards against the Denver Broncos.

"I don't think you just try to bench a player after having one true bad game," Glenn told reporters. "Because I thought the other games he played fairly well."

When the Jets' offense was unable to move the ball again on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, Fields was benched at halftime in favor of Tyrod Taylor. Glenn hasn't committed to a starting quarterback in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

More disappointing than the offensive woes is the defensive regression that has happened. Glenn, whose background is on that side of the ball as a former cornerback and four years as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2021 to '24, seemed like a great fit for a unit with Sauce Gardner, Will McDonald, Quinnen Williams and Jermaine Johnson II.

The Jets currently rank 26th in points allowed per game and 24th in defensive DVOA.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reported on Oct. 17 that Glenn is unlikely to be fired during the regular season or in the offseason because Johnson is taking a patient approach to let Glenn and first-year general manager Darren Mougey to build up the roster.

It was also pointed out by Rosenblatt that Johnson gave Glenn a contract worth more than Robert Saleh's deal, which was valued at $5 million annually. Saleh is still being paid by the team through this season as part of the five-year deal he originally signed in January 2021.

Glenn also signed a five-year deal when he was hired as head coach, so Johnson will be paying him through 2029 regardless.

The Jets are the NFL's lone remaining winless team. They are two losses away from securing their 10th consecutive season with a losing record. They are also in serious danger of extending their playoff drought to 16 straight seasons since reaching back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010.
