Cam Ward's Titans Offense Reportedly to Be 'Simplified' After Brian Callahan's Firing

Scott PolacekOct 19, 2025

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly looking to keep things simple for rookie quarterback Cam Ward following a 1-5 start that led to head coach Brian Callahan's firing.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday that Tennessee plans to simplify its offense for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots under interim coach Mike McCoy.

"The Titans want to make sure Ward is focused on doing a few things well rather than trying to grasp the many elements that the rookie quarterback often struggled to do in their first six games," Schefter reported.

Even if the 2025 season continues to be a disappointing one for the Titans, maximizing Ward's chances at individual success remains the most important thing for the organization.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft is the franchise quarterback and the team's primary building block. McCoy made no secret about his overall importance during his initial press conference Tuesday.

"That's going to be our No. 1 focus," McCoy told reporters. "How do we get Cam to be more efficient and have more success?"

It also makes sense the Titans would take a simplified approach for Sunday's game even outside of Ward. After all, offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who is Brian's father, left the organization as well following the coaching change.

That means assistant offensive line coach Scott Fuchs and offensive assistant coach Matt Jones are in charge of the blocking schemes and will be getting accustomed to new roles for a struggling offense.

Tennessee is 31st in the league in points per game and last in total yards per game. Its only win came by a single point against the Arizona Cardinals in a contest that featured Emari Demercado dropping the ball at the goal line on a surefire touchdown, Kyler Murray temporarily leaving because a snap hit him in the head and an unbelievable fumble recovery for a Titans touchdown after Ward's pass was intercepted.

The AFC South team hasn't given its fans much reason for optimism at all, and it surely hopes a simpler approach going into three straight games against potential AFC contenders in the Patriots, Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Chargers changes that.

Even if the Titans don't win those games, better play from Ward—who is 33rd in the league in QBR—with that simpler approach would at least serve as a building block.
