Vanderbilt Freshman Chandler Bing's Bio Goes Viral for Never Watching 'Friends' Show

Vanderbilt freshman Chandler Bing knows the question everyone is going to ask based on his bio on the team's official athletic website.

The "personal" section on Bing's page includes only one bullet point stating he has never watched an episode of Friends.

Vanderbilt's Chandler Bing is a 3-star prospect from Atlanta who enrolled in school in April after playing high school ball at Pace Academy. He was named to the All-State team and averaged 19.3 points per game as a senior in 2024-25.

Bing told Paul Skrbina of The Tennessean in May that his mom has seen the sitcom, but it wasn't on his parents' minds when they were naming him.

"My parents weren't even thinking about the show," Bing said. "My mom has seen the show, but when they were naming me, I guess she didn't watch it that much, wasn't even thinking about that."

To his credit, Bing also Skrbina he "never really had a problem" with the jokes about his name being the same as the character played by Matthew Perry in part because he wasn't familiar with it until someone let him know about the connection.

"Once people told me about it, I was like, 'OK, well, I know I'm going to get it a lot now.'"

Bing is actually related to Basketball Hall of Famer and former Detroit mayor Dave Bing as a distant cousin, though he has never actually met him.

"I haven't spoken to him," Chandler said to Skrbina. "My dad knows him very well."

The Chandler Bing character—or "Miss Chanandler Bong" on the address label of the TV Guide delivered to his apartment—became arguably the standout member of the ensemble cast, so the Vanderbilt forward can at least know he's keeping good company.

Perhaps the most surprising part of this whole thing is finding someone who has never seen an episode of Friends. Even though the show ended in 2004, it's been a staple in syndication for two decades now that it seems impossible someone has never come across it even as a curiosity.
