Vikings' J.J. McCarthy Reportedly 'Still Not 100%' from Ankle Injury amid Bye Week

Doric SamOct 12, 2025

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is making progress in his recovery from his ankle injury during the team's bye week, but it sounds he will have to remain sidelined for a while longer.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday that McCarthy "got good work during the bye week" and "should be able to return to practice this week," but he's "still not 100 percent on that ankle."

McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain in a Week 2 loss against the Atlanta Falcons and was expected to miss two to four weeks, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Veteran backup Carson Wentz took over in his absence and led Minnesota to two wins in its last three games, giving the team a 3-2 record this season.

After McCarthy misses his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus, the Vikings are remaining cautious with his recovery. Pelissero went on to explain that the team won't re-insert him as the starter until it's clear that he's fully healthy.

"They've gotta see his mobility, they've gotta see how the ankle responds, and they've gotta make sure that he's comfortable and in a groove from an operational perspective before they put him back out on the field," Pelissero said.

However, Minnesota's quarterback situation is facing even more questions, as Pelissero noted that Wentz is "dealing with a left shoulder injury" and "could be limited in practice this week."

The Vikings will return to action in Week 7 against a Philadelphia Eagles team that has lost back-to-back games, but it remains to be seen who will be under center to start the game.
