Ranger Suarez, Red Sox Agree to $130M Contract, Boston's Updated Rotation, Payroll

Left-handed starting pitcher Ranger Suárez, who spent eight seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, is now a member of the Boston Red Sox.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network and the New York Post first reported that Suárez agreed to a deal with Boston.

Per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the agreement is for $130 million over five years.

This move continues Boston's offseason trend of prioritizing pitching quality and depth.

Boston's 2026 tax payroll was $250.9 million before this move. Adding Suárez's $28 million average annual salary will push that number close to $280 million, which would be the sixth-highest in MLB as things currently stand.

The 30-year-old Suárez went 12-8 with a 3.20 ERA over 26 starts (157.1 innings) in 2025. He struck out 151 batters and posted a 1.22 WHIP as well.

Suárez was a full-time starter in the Philadelphia rotation over the past four years. During that time, the southpaw went 38-29 with a 3.59 ERA (1.29 WHIP) and an 8.3 K/9 rate.

He's been solid in the regular season but lights-out in the playoffs, going 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA (1.06 WHIP) over 11 games (eight starts) and a 9.3 K/9 rate.

However, Suárez's time in Philadelphia has ended. The Phillies' loss is the Red Sox's gain, as Boston gets a big-game pitcher who has excelled during his time as a full-time starter.

This also gives the Red Sox six quality starters entering the season, with Patrick Sandoval on the roster to serve as a swing man or to fill in if someone misses time due to an injury.

Kutter Crawford will also return after missing all of 2025 due to patellar tendinopathy and a wrist injury.

Boston's lineup could still use some help after the loss of Alex Bregman in free agency, but one way to offset a limited offense is by having a pitching staff that won't give up a lot of runs.
