Jonathan Kuminga Reportedly Absent from Jimmy Butler-Led Minicamp amid Contract Rumors
Restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga wasn't in attendance for an informal minicamp organized by Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Charania reported Wednesday on NBA Today that Warriors players are working out in San Diego, and Kuminga is the only player from Golden State's tentative 2025-26 squad who's absent:
This may not signify anything amid the ongoing standoff between Kuminga and the Warriors. The 22-year-old doesn't have a contract, so he's not compelled to show up for any official or unofficial team functions. There's also the risk that he works out in San Diego and suffers an injury that meaningfully impacts how much Golden State or another team is prepared to pay him.
The situation appears to be exactly the same as it was a few days and even weeks ago.
Charania and Anthony Slater reported for ESPN the inclusion of a team option in his contract continues to be the biggest point of contention for Kuminga and Golden State.
The Warriors have tabled a three-year offer worth $75.2 million, but only $48.3 million of that amount is fully guaranteed because Year 3 is a team option. Their best offer without an option is three years and $54 million.
Kuminga still has the choice of signing the qualifying offer. While that would mean only collecting $7.9 million, he'd gain the luxury of hitting unrestricted free agency next summer.
Aaron Turner, Kuminga's agent, indicated that's a serious consideration leading up to the Oct. 1 deadline.
"There's a lot of upside," he said on The Hoop Collective podcast (via Slater). "He wants to pick where he wants to go. So the QO is real for sure."
Everyone remains in limbo for now. With the regular season a little less than a month away, Charania's newest report largely serves to show Golden State and Kuminga both risk having their preparations disrupted the longer he's without a contract.
