Robert Suarez Reportedly Opts Out of Final 2 Years of Padres Contract, Led NL in Saves
Robert Suárez is hitting free agency.
The star closer opted out of the final two years and $16 million left on his contract with the San Diego Padres on Monday, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Suárez previously signed a five-year, $46 million deal with the Padres in Nov. 2022.

The choice to opt out doesn't come as a major surprise, as the National League leader in saves should be able to land a contract worth over $8 million per year as a free agent following an impressive 2025 campaign.
Suárez recorded 75 strikeouts compared to 16 walks in 69.2 innings of work, posting a 2.97 ERA and 0.904 WHIP.
He also finished with 40 saves, the second-most among all closers. Suárez was rewarded for his efforts by earning his second consecutive All-Star nod and helped San Diego clinch a postseason berth.
The right-hander spent the first four years of his MLB career with the Padres, playing in Japan prior to joining the club. He steadily blossomed into a key piece of San Diego's bullpen, taking over as the team's closer in 2024.
Suárez's track record should also be enticing for opposing front offices, as he compiled a career 2.89 ERA heading into the 2025 season.
While a return to the Padres in free agency is still possible, now he'll be able to receive offers from around the majors before making a decision.
