MLB to Use ABS Robot-Umpire System for Challenges in 2026 Season, Full Rules Announced

The future is officially coming to MLB next year.

The league announced on Tuesday that an Automated Ball Strike (ABS) system will be implemented for the 2026 season and provided the rules for how the system will work:

Joel Sherman of the New York Post previously reported that the league's Joint Competition Committee was scheduled to meet on Tuesday, and there was a "strong expectation" that an ABS system with robot umpires would be approved.

The 11-person Joint Competition Committee is made up of six owners, four players and an umpire. Sherman explained that since the owners have the majority and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred "has been strongly in favor of implementing" an ABS System, "the belief has been that the legislation will pass."

The ABS system has been used in various levels of the minor leagues since 2021. In 2022, the system was put in place for all Triple-A games. MLB tested out the system during spring training this year and in the All-Star Game in July with a strike zone determined for individual players based on height.

Now that it's official, the ABS system will eliminate one of the biggest sources of debates in baseball. While human error is natural, umpires have faced more criticism than ever when the wrong call is made at a crucial time. Automated calls will leave no room for controversy, and there won't be any managers or players arguing with the electronic system.

As the 2025 playoffs draw nearer, it seems like this is the final time to enjoy the game in its purest form before it transitions to a new era with added technology in 2026.
