Justin Fields in NFL's Concussion Protocol, Jets to Make Plans for Tyrod to Start

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields is in concussion protocol, head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters on Monday.

It's "uncertain" if Fields will play in Week 3 after being injured during the Jets' 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, according to the Associated Press (h/t NFL.com).

With Fields' status uncertain, Glenn is preparing for the possibility that veteran Tyrod Taylor will have to start.

"We have to get more information so we can be more pinpointed on that, but we do have to look at it that way," Glenn said on Monday, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. "If Justin can't play, then Tyrod would be the guy, and we'd build a plan that's suitable for him."

Fields left the game early in the fourth quarter after he was sacked by Joey Bosa, entering New York's medical tent on the sideline before eventually heading into the team's locker room.

The 26-year-old was 3-of-11 for 27 yards prior to exiting the contest. Fields also picked up 49 rushing yards on five attempts, but lost a fumble in the first half.

He was replaced by Taylor to close out the game.

It was a disappointing result for Fields, especially after he completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 218 yards while scoring three total touchdowns in New York's season-opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The former first-round pick joined the Jets on a two-year, $40 million contract as a free agent in March.

Fields has been hampered by injuries throughout his career, missing time as a rookie due to an ankle issue. He also missed multiple games in 2022 with a separated left shoulder before making just 13 appearances during his 2023 campaign due to a dislocated thumb.

Now, Fields will need to clear all five steps of the NFL's concussion protocol until he'll be able to practice or play again.

If he remains sidelined as the Jets travel to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, Taylor will likely continue to fill in under center.
