Brock Purdy Out vs. Saints in NFL Week 2 with Toe Injury, Mac Jones to Start

Paul KasabianSep 12, 2025

The San Francisco 49ers will not have quarterback Brock Purdy for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Friday they ruled Purdy out, which means Mac Jones will make the start.

News broke on Thursday that Purdy was dealing with a variant of turf toe, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, and that he would be out two-to-five weeks.

One day earlier, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Purdy was a "long shot" to play in Week 2 against the Saints due to the toe injury and an ailment to his left (non-throwing) shoulder.

Purdy burst onto the scene near the end of the 2022 season, replacing Jimmy Garoppolo in the lineup after the veteran suffered a season-ending foot injury. The last pick of the 2022 NFL draft then led the 49ers to eight straight wins, including two in the playoffs. Unfortunately, Purdy suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow during the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, ending his season.

Purdy was ready for the 2023 season, though, and proceeded to help guide the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. He led the NFL with 9.6 yards per pass attempt, a 113.0 quarterback rating and 72.8 QBR en route to 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns (11 interceptions). Purdy finished fourth in the NFL MVP voting as well.

The 2024 season wasn't as successful, as injuries snakebit the team on both sides of the ball en route to a 6-11 season. Purdy finished the year with 3,864 passing yards and 20 touchdowns (12 picks).

The 2025 campaign began with a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy completed 26-of-35 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Without Purdy, Jones is the 49ers' starter.

Jones, the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, started three years with the New England Patriots before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served as Trevor Lawrence's backup before being thrust into starting duty after Lawrence suffered an injury to his left AC joint that required surgery. Jones completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions over 10 games (seven starts).
