Heat Reportedly 'Open' to Norman Powell Contract Extension If Season Starts Well
After being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Miami Heat this offseason, sharpshooting wing Norman Powell reportedly could have a home in South Beach for a while.
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (h/t HoopsHype) reported that the Heat are "open to considering an extension with Powell if the start of the season goes well." The 32-year-old is set to make $20.6 million this season in the final year of his contract.
A 10-year veteran, Powell is coming off one of his best seasons in the NBA. He started all 60 of his appearances in 2024-25 and averaged a career-high 21.8 points while adding 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals. He shot 41.8 percent from three-point range, his second straight year shooting over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Jackson noted that Miami is staring at a $166 million payroll without including Powell's potential new deal, and an extension would likely leave the franchise with "modest cap space."
Still, it appears that Powell will have the chance to earn a major payday if he makes a good impression on his new team. The Heat are hoping that the additional firepower he brings will help them make a deeper run in the playoffs after being eliminated in the first round in back-to-back seasons.
