Travis Hunter Says He Can 'Do More' After Playing Both Ways for Jaguars in NFL Debut
Travis Hunter and the Jacksonville Jaguars started their season with a win over the Carolina Panthers, but the two-way star believes he's capable of doing more if head coach Liam Coen asks him to.
"I did my job. That was the main focus, me doing my job," Hunter said, per ESPN's Michael DiRocco. "I did what they asked me to do, and I know I could do more and I know I could do better."
Hunter finished his debut with six receptions for 33 yards on offense and added a tackle on defense. Per the Associated Press' Mark Long, he played 44 snaps on offense and just six snaps on defense.
He was the first player over the last 20 years to record five receptions while recording five or more defensive snaps.
While it wasn't a bad start to the season by any means, it was far from what fans are used to seeing from Hunter. In his Heisman Trophy campaign at Colorado last year, Hunter recorded 1,258 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on offense and added 35 tackles, 11 passes defended and four interceptions on defense.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Saturday that the Jaguars planned to use Hunter as an "every-down wide receiver and situational corner" against the Panthers. Schefter noted that the game plan for Hunter could change depending on the week.
"We're going to have to figure it out," Coen told reporters Friday. "We're going to have to all be flexible. We'll come up with that plan over the next 24 hours in terms like, alright, what are the exact maybe numbers we want to hit on both sides or usage?"
Coen said Hunter didn't get as many defensive reps as they expect him to moving forward because of the formations the Panthers were in.
"There was a lot of different kind of coverage changes in the back end for us with some of [the Panthers'] formations, adjustments, [and] it was a lot that those guys had to handle defensively," Coen said. "So, it was maybe a little bit less for him this game. I think it will only continue to evolve and go more."
As the season goes on, the Jaguars will likely ask more from Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick, and he'll be ready to take on a bigger workload when the time comes.
