Aidan Hutchinson, Lions Reportedly Won't Reach Contract Extension Before Season Opener

Zach BacharSep 6, 2025

The Detroit Lions and star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson reportedly aren't on the verge of a contract extension agreement.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Hutchinson isn't expected to sign an extension with the Lions before their season-opener against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday despite having "positive contract conversations."

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday that both sides started negotiating a new deal.

Hutchinson has two seasons left on his rookie deal after the Lionsย picked upย his fifth-year option in April. He's currently set to have base salaries of $1.1 million and $19.8 million in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

Star pass-rushers have been getting paid throughout the offseason, as the Cleveland Brownsย handedย Myles Garrett a four-year extension with an average value of $40 million per year in March. Micah Parsonsย receivedย a four-year contract worth $188 million from the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 28, while Nik Bonitto and the Denver Broncos agreed to a four-yearย extensionย worth up to $120 million on Thursday.

The lack of an impending extension between Hutchinson and Detroit could stem from the uncertainty surrounding his production during the upcoming 2025 season, as he missed the team's final 12 regular-season games in 2024 due to aย fractured fibula and tibia.

Still, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft has exceeded expectations when healthy.

Hutchinson has recorded 28.5 sacks in 39 career games, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2023.

He was off to a strong start to his 2024 campaign prior to the injury, racking up 27 pressures, 19 tackles, 17 quarterback hits, 7.5 sacks and one forced fumble in five appearances.

While an extension doesn't seem to be off the table, it reportedly won't come before kickoff between the Lions and Packers on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
