Julia StumbaughSep 5, 2025

Los Angeles Angels prospect and High-A Tri-City outfielder Rio Foster has been hospitalized in critical condition after being involved in a single-car crash on Friday morning, the Angels announced.

The 22-year-old was a passenger in the vehicle when the crash occurred in Richland, Washington, according to the club.

"Earlier today, the Angels Organization learned that Rio Foster, a member of our Tri-City affiliate, was a passenger in a serious car accident in Richland, WA," the Angels said in a statement.

"Rio is currently receiving medical care at a local hospital and remains in critical condition. We ask that the entire Angels Community joins our Organization in keeping Rio and his family in their hearts during this difficult time."

High-A Tri-City said in a statement that Friday's game against the Hillsboro Hops would be cancelled.

"The thoughts and prayers of the entire Dust Devils organization are with Rio Foster who was a passenger in a car accident early this morning and sustained serious injuries," the High-A club wrote.

The Richland Police Department reported a serious crash had taken place in the area at 2 a.m. Friday in a Facebook post. The police did not confirm when asked by the Tri-City Herald if this crash had involved Foster.

The Facebook post described the crash, which is being investigated as a DUI, as "a single vehicle roll over where two of the four people in the car were ejected." All four passengers were taken to the hospital, and two were in critical condition, according to the police.

Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery told reporters he had no further updates as to Foster's condition as of Friday night, per MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger.

"Just thinking about him and his family," Montgomery said, per Bollinger. "He's a great kid, we had him in Spring Training. We talked to him. He was a little bit of a later-round Draft pick, and he's done some good things when we saw him in Spring Training. And he was named Player of the Month recently. So I mean, his career was obviously in a good spot, but that's all on hold. Praying for the best is all we can do."

Foster was selected by the Angels in the 16th round of the 2023 draft out of Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, South Carolina. He was named the Northwest League Player of the Month on Thursday after recording an OPS over 1.000 during the month of August.
