US Open Tennis 2025 Results, Winners, Losers and Highlights from Thursday's Bracket

Joe TanseyAug 28, 2025

Jannik Sinner continued the strong start to his title defense at the 2025 US Open with another straight-set win.

The No. 1 seed in the men's singles draw replicated what No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz did in the first two rounds. Both title contenders have not lost a set yet in New York.

American Tommy Paul won the match of the night, a marathon five-set affair with Nuno Borges that ended on a dramatic match point at 1:46 a.m. local time.

Iga Swiatek, the women's No. 2 seed, faced more difficulty inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday afternoon. She had to battle through a three-set second-round match to keep her title hopes alive.

The top American women's singles title hopeful, Coco Gauff, looked better in her second-round win on Thursday night than she did in her opener.

Gauff won in straight sets and moved one win away from a potential showdown with Naomi Osaka.

Sinner needed just over two hours to book his spot in the third round.

The No. 1 seed and reigning men's singles champion hasn't lost more than three games in a set so far through two rounds.

The Italian should face a bit of a tougher matchup in the third round against No. 27 seed Denis Shapovalov. Sinner could face American No. 14 seed Tommy Paul in the fourth round.

Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi produced one of Thursday's biggest upset, as he rallied back from two sets down to defeat No. 19 seed Francisco Cerundolo.

Riedi's third-round opponent, Kamil Majchrzak, took down No. 9 seed Karen Khachanov in five sets. The unseeded player from Poland came back from two sets down to spring the upset.

The pair of upsets and the withdrawal of No. 5 seed Jack Draper opened up the top half of the draw for Sinner and No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev.

Zverev picked up a straight-set victory on Thursday night over Jacob Fearnley.

Zverev and Sinner, who both haven't lost a set through two rounds, are likely headed for a semifinal showdown.

No. 29 Anna Kalinskaya def. Yulia Putintseva, 6-1, 7-5

Swiatek experienced a surprising second-round test from Suzan Lamens.

Swiatek cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set, but then dropped the second set 6-4 to Lamens.

The No. 2 seed rallied in the third set to avoid the biggest upset of the tournament so far.

Swiatek needs to play much better in the third round and beyond if she wants to land her second US Open crown. Next up for the No. 2 seed is No. 29 seed Anna Kalinskaya.

Naomi Osaka looks like a strong alternative to Swiatek to come out of the bottom half of the draw.

The No. 23 seed and two-time US Open champion has not lost a set yet over two rounds. She cruised against American Hailey Baptiste on Thursday afternoon.

Osaka could be headed for a fourth-round showdown against Coco Gauff.

Gauff won in straight sets on Thursday night over Donna Vekic.

Gauff faces No. 28 seed Magdalena Frech in the third round, while Osaka takes on No. 15 seed Daria Kasatkina.
