Terique Owens, Son of NFL Legend Terrell Owens, Reportedly Waived by 49ers

Adam WellsAug 26, 2025

Despite having an injury-depleted receiver room going into the regular season, the San Francisco 49ers waived Terique Owens ahead of Tuesday's deadline for teams to cut their rosters down to 53 players.

Per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Owens is being waived but the 49ers could add him to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

Terique Owens is the son of 49ers legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens.

Owens originally joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He didn't make the roster coming out of training camp as a rookie due in part to a hand injury suffered early in the preseason, but the team signed him to their practice squad during the season.

The 49ers didn't activate Owens to their 53-man roster last season. He was given a reserve/future contract in January, affording the team more opportunities to evaluate his skill set.

Despite not getting a lot of run in the preseason, Owens did make an impact in Saturday's win over the Los Angeles Chargers. He caught two passes for 39 yards and one touchdown.

There are a lot of question marks at wide receiver in San Francisco going into the regular season. Brandon Aiyuk, Jacob Cowing, Russell Gage Jr. and Jordan Watkins are all injured.

Jauan Jennings hasn't participated in training camp or preseason activities since July 27 due to a calf injury. He is also embroiled in a contract standoff with the club in which both sides are believed to be upset, per Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard.

It's unclear if Jennings will be available for the start of the regular season. Ricky Pearsall, Skyy Moore and Robbie Chosen are on track to be the top three receivers in Week 1 if Jennings can't go.

Owens spent six seasons in college from 2018 to '23, playing for three different programs. He had a career-high 528 yards and four touchdowns as a redshirt senior at Missouri State in his final college season.
