Terrell Owens' Son Terique Waived by 49ers Amid Reported Hand Injury

Adam WellsAug 7, 2024

Terique Owens, son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, has been waived by the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers announced the roster move on Wednesday. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo added Owens was waived with an injury designation due to a small fracture in his right hand that will keep him out for five to seven weeks.

Per Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith, Owens will go on the 49ers' injured reserve if he is unclaimed on waivers.

David Smith called it a "long shot" that Owens plays this season. The 24-year-old signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent. He began his college career in 2018 at Contra Costa College.

Owens transferred to Florida Atlantic and appeared in four games during the 2020 season. He moved again to Missouri State before the 2021 campaign and appeared in 27 games over three seasons for the Bears.

Despite being a long-shot candidate to make the 49ers roster, Owens was making a nice impression early in training camp. He caught touchdown passes in one-on-one and 11-on-11 drills during San Francisco's practice on July 30.

The 49ers were among several teams that scouted Owens during Missouri State's pro day in March.

Terrell Owens played 15 seasons in the NFL from 1996 to 2010. He was originally drafted by the 49ers as a third-round pick out of Chattanooga.

In his eight seasons with the 49ers, Terrell racked up 592 receptions, 8,572 receiving yards and 81 touchdowns. He ranks second in franchise history to Jerry Rice in all three categories.

The 49ers inducted Owens into their team Hall of Fame in 2019. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
