Karolina Muchova (11) def. Venus Williams
1 of 4
Venus Williams fell to No. 11 seed Karolína Muchová on Monday, ending her hopes of a Cinderella run at the U.S. Open. Muchová defeated the 45-year-old, currently ranked No. 602 in the world, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, after Williams battled back to take the second set.
Williams has made more appearances at the U.S. Open than any player in tennis history. Despite the early exit, she added to her legendary résumé by becoming the third-oldest woman to ever compete at Flushing Meadows and by playing in her 101st U.S. Open match.
A two-time U.S. Open champion, Williams won back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001—her first coming when Muchová was just four years old. On Monday, her milestone presence on the court overshadowed the loss as she put up a tough fight at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
With the win, Muchová will face the winner of the first-round match between Sorana Cîrstea and Solana Sierra.
Carlos Alcaraz (2) def. Reilly Opelka
2 of 4
While most of the buzz was around Carlos Alcaraz's new haircut, he was locked in on the court, cruising past Reilly Opelka in straight sets on Monday, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
Alcaraz didn't drop a single point on his serve in the opening set, putting on a masterclass to close it out in just 37 minutes. He then stormed back to win the final 11 points of the second set, overwhelming Opelka to take full control of the match.
As Opelka grew desperate to mount a comeback, he committed a series of double faults, opening the door for the world No. 2, who closed out the match in the final set.
Alcaraz will face Mattia Bellucci in the second round on Wednesday.
Renata Zarazúa upsets Madison Keys (6)
3 of 4
Australian Open champion and No. 6 seed Madison Keys was upset Monday by the world's 82nd-ranked player, Renata Zarazúa, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (3), 7-5. Keys became just the second American woman in the last 30 years to lose in the first round of the U.S. Open as a top-10 seed.
The Grand Slam champion committed 89 unforced errors and 14 double faults, later admitting that nerves got the best of her at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
"I feel like today for the first time in a while, my nerves really got the better of me, and it kind of became a little bit paralysing," Keys said, per the BBC's Alex Brotherton. "You always kind of feel first-round jitters, and as the day is getting closer, you're feeling more and more nervous."
Last year, Keys exited in the third round as the No. 14 seed, falling to No. 33 Elise Mertens.
Zarazúa will face Diane Parry in the second round on Wednesday.
Jack Draper (5) def. Federico Agustin Gomez
4 of 4
Jack Draper defeated Federico Agustín Gómez in four sets on Monday, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-2, to advance to the second round of the U.S. Open.
Draper, a semifinalist at last year's U.S. Open, faced a tough test in his return to New York. After missing a chance to close out the match in straight sets, he regrouped to win in four. The match marked his first singles appearance since Wimbledon in July, following an arm injury.
The 23-year-old saw the extra set as a positive in the end adding to some comeback conditioning.
"I needed tennis in my legs. I needed to play a three-hour match," Draper said, per the BBC's Jonathan Jurejko. "I was almost a bit happy when I lost the third because my level wasn't amazing.
Considered one of the tournament favorites, Draper will face Zizou Bergs in the second round on Wednesday.
