Cam Ward-Jeffery Simmons Scuffle Downplayed as Not 'Serious' By Titans' Tyler Lockett

Zach BacharAug 21, 2025

There doesn't seem to be much concern within the Tennessee Titans regarding the practice altercation involving rookie quarterback Cam Ward and star defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons.

"I don't think it was anything that was serious," Titans wide receiver Tyler Lockett said during an appearance on The Jim Rome Show (h/t Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk). "I think it was kind of taken out of proportion, and once it hit the media and blew up, it became a crazy story. I think one of the things that's cool to see is when you have a quarterback that's willing to fight for you or willing to go to battle for you, and compete at the level he's willing to compete at, it just makes everybody have his back that much more."

Ward and Simmons reportedly exchanged shoves after the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft found wideout Calvin Ridley for a touchdown in practice on Monday and taunted his teammate.

While training camp scuffles are far from uncommon, it's unusual to see a first-year passer go back and forth with a three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman.

Still, there didn't seem to be any lingering animosity between the two afterwards.

"It was fun, and I think it was what we needed," Ward said on Wednesday, per ESPN's Turron Davenport. "We love competing, just with me and Jeff, and I'm excited to have that man as my teammate."

Simmons echoed a similar sentiment.

"It's training camp, and tempers flare," Simmons explained, via Davenport. "I respect the hell out of our offense for having the quarterback's back. At the end of the day, we're family and moved on from it."

Ward will look to provide a boost to a Titans offense that struggled during their 3-14 campaign in 2024, ranking No. 27 among all teams by averaging just 18.3 points per game.
