Cam Ward, Jeffery Simmons Cause Scuffle at Titans Practice After Calvin Ridley TD

Timothy RappAug 18, 2025

Cam Ward isn't afraid to mix it up.

The Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback exchanged shoves with teammate and defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons after hitting Calvin Ridley for a touchdown pass during Monday's practice, per multiple reports.

The rest of the offense, as you might imagine, didn't take kindly to Simmons' response and a quick scrum ensued. Simmons ended up without his helmet on and left the drill.

All in all, however, pretty standard stuff for a summer practice, where tempers often run hot as the temperatures do the same. Granted, hitting the quarterback is almost always considered off limits, but in this case it sounds like Ward at least partially instigated the situation.

As for Ward, the young quarterback continues to have folks in Tennessee excited about his potential.

"I haven't seen him change one bit from the time I met him before we picked him," general manager Mike Borgonzi told Jeff Howe of The Athletic on July 30. "That's what makes him special. He doesn't hear all the noise. He does carry that chip on his shoulder, which is a good thing. He has a really good demeanor about him. He's confident. He knows who he is. I don't think being the No. 1 pick has changed him at all. He comes out here and works just like he did last year in Miami."

The Titans have put the future of their franchise in Ward's hands after selecting him No. 1 overall at this year's NFL draft. Through two preseason games he's 7-of-15 through the air for 109 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.

"He's showing all the things that we need to see from an operations standpoint," head coach Brian Callahan told reporters regarding Ward's preseason performances.

The Titans are a rebuilding team, so expecting him to suddenly catapult them into contention is unrealistic. But there is hope in Tennessee, and it starts with Ward.
