It initially looked as though the Brewers had a bit of magic left in them after winning the first two games of the series in miraculous fashion, overcoming an 8-1 deficit in Friday's opener and winning in extra innings on Saturday. After falling behind 1-0 in the seventh, Milwaukee designated hitter William Contreras hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the ninth. However, Cincinnati answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by catcher Jose Trevino to force the extra inning.

The Brewers tried to use small-ball to take the lead in the 10th, but Blake Perkins bunted into a fielder's choice that left Andrew Vaughn out at third base. Danny Jansen then hit a pop-out to second base, and pinch-hitter Tyler Black lined out to shortstop, paving the way for some heroics by the Reds.

Cincinnati utilized a similar strategy to start the bottom of the 10th, as Spencer Steer laid down a sac bunt that successfully moved TJ Friedl to third. After back-to-back intentional walks to Elly De La Cruz and Will Benson loaded the bases, Hays stepped to the plate and proved that Milwaukee made a mistake. He swung at the first pitch he saw relief pitcher Grant Anderson and sent it down the third base line for the walk-off victory.

The win helped the Reds (65-60) close the distance in the race for the final National League wild-card spot. Despite the loss, the Brewers still own the best record in the majors at 78-45.
