Lakers to Unveil Pat Riley Statue at Crypto.com Arena Before Celtics Game on Feb. 22
The Los Angeles Lakers announced plans to unveil a statue of former legendary head coach and current Miami Heat president Pat Riley on Feb. 22, per ESPN's Dave McMenamin.
The statue will be revealed at Star Plaza prior to Los Angeles' matchup with the Boston Celtics.
Riley served as head coach of the Lakers from 1981-90, winning four championships during that span.
He patrolled the sidelines during Los Angeles' "Showtime" era, headlined by team icons such as Magic Johnson and Kareem Adbul-Jabbar.
The Lakers were dominant throughout Riley's tenure with the organization, owning a 533-194 record to go along with a 102-47 mark in the playoffs. They won at least 50 games in all nine of his years with the team and crossed the 60-win threshold in four straight seasons from 1985-88.
Riley's statue was originally commissioned by the team in Nov. 2024. He'll become the eighth Laker to be honored with a statue, joining Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, Chick Hearn, Shaquille O'Neal, Jerry West, Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson.
Riley's NBA career started as a player in 1967, suiting up for three teams including the Lakers during his days on the court. He won a title in Los Angeles during the 1971-72 season.
Riley eventually became an assistant with the Lakers before transitioning to head coach as a replacement for Paul Westhead. After leaving Los Angeles, he served as head coach of the New York Knicks from 1991-95 until he eventually joined the Heat.
He was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
While Riley continues to make personnel decisions for Miami, he'll be recognized by the Lakers during the upcoming regular season.
