Yankees Legend Mariano Rivera Suffers Torn Achilles Injury in Old-Timers' Day Game
New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera, widely considered the greatest closer in MLB history, suffered a torn Achilles injury during the team's Old-Timers' Day Game on Saturday.
Rivera's agent, Fernando Cuza, confirmed the news to The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.
The 55-year-old Rivera played with the Yankees from 1995-2013. Rivera's 652 saves rank first all-time, and he is the only player in MLB history to get a unanimously induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, earning the honor in 2019.

Rivera posted a 2.21 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP over his career. Remarkably, he finished with a sub-two ERA in 11 seasons.
He made 13 All-Star Games and won five World Series with the Yankees in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009. The five-time Rolaids Reliever of the Year also finished top three in the AL Cy Young race on four occasions (1996, 1999, 2004, 2005).
Needless to say, Rivera was a superstar. His career is littered with amazing accomplishments, but one of his greatest is the totality of the 2013 season. In May 2012, Rivera suffered a torn ACL in his right knee while shagging fly balls before a road game against the Kansas City Royals, ending his season.
However, Rivera, who was 43 years old, came back for one more season. He was sensational, posting a 2.11 ERA with 44 saves. Rivera made the All-Star Game one more time and retired after the year.
In the present date, fans loved seeing Rivera, who got a raucous ovation on a day when the Yankees honored the 2000 World Series-winning team on its 25th anniversay. He even got to bat and smacked a single to left field off his old teammate, starting pitcher Andy Pettitte.
Obviously, the injury is a tough and unfortunate blow, and hopefully Rivera returns to full health soon enough.
