Guardians' Nic Enright Earns 1st Career MLB Save vs. Mets Amid Cancer Treatment
In the midst of undergoing treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma, Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Nic Enright earned his first career MLB save Monday night.
Enright entered in the bottom of the 10th with a 7-5 lead over the New York Mets. He surrendered one hit and one unearned run before closing out a 7-6 victory on the road.
According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Enright was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2022. He missed some time after undergoing four rounds of immunotherapy in early 2023, but the 28-year-old returned during the 2023 campaign, and he made his MLB debut this season.

Enright, who is 2-0 with a 2.01 ERA in 19 appearances for the Guardians this season, is scheduled to undergo his final round of treatment in November.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt discussed Enright's journey with reporters after Monday's game, saying: "He was almost crying on the field just now. If you read his story, it's pretty inspirational."
Enright also talked about the enormity of Monday's accomplishment given everything he overcame to get to this point, saying:
"Really, really cool. These last couple of years, especially, I've gone through a lot of adversity and just everything that's gone on. And so for me, it's being able to reflect on those in these moments. I think that helps being able to slow the game down. Because it hasn't exactly been a red-carpet rollout for my career trajectory."
Although he didn't make his MLB debut until May 25 of this year, Enright has quickly developed into a key bullpen piece for the Guardians.
In fact, the 2019 20th-round draft pick has the second-lowest ERA on the team out of any pitcher who has made at least five appearances this season.
Enright became even more important last week when MLB placed Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase on non-disciplinary paid leave due to a gambling investigation.
Cade Smith is likely ahead of Enright in the pecking order for saves moving forward, but after getting the job done on Monday, Enright could find himself in more end-game situations over the final two months of the 2025 season.
