Eagles' Quinyon Mitchell, Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Named Nos. 49, 50 on NFL Top 100

Joseph ZuckerAug 4, 2025

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield led off the back half of the NFL's Top 100 players.

It's a big jump for Mayfield, who was omitted from the 2024 ranking and rose to No. 50. Mitchell debuted at No. 49 after a strong rookie campaign.

There was clearly some skepticism about whether Mayfield's unexpectedly strong first season with Tampa Bay was a bit of a mirage. He put that notion to bed by performing even better compared to 2023.

The 30-year-old threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing 71.4 percent of his passes. Although his 16 interceptions were tied for the most in the league, he ranked 13th in QBR (61.6) among qualified passers, per ESPN.com.

While he hasn't broken into the elite tier, emerging as a dependable starter capable of going for 4,000-plus yards is a far cry from where he was with the Cleveland Browns or Carolina Panthers.

Mayfield, along with Sam Darnold, has become a poster boy for how young quarterbacks don't always develop on a linear arc, and the right setting can make all the difference.

Mitchell was second behind Los Angeles Rams linebacker Jared Verse in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. While Verse was the overwhelming winner with 36 first-place votes, players around the NFL disagreed with that order as they had him four spots behind Mitchell.

The Eagles defensive back didn't register an interception but broke up 12 passes. According to Pro Football Reference, he held opposing quarterbacks to 6.3 yards per target and an 87.2 passer rating.

Philadelphia gave up the fewest passing yards (174.2 per game) of any team, and Mitchell was a big ingredient why. If he continues along this trajectory, he's all but certain to earn his first Pro Bowl nod in 2025.

And the scary thought for NFC offenses is that the Eagles had another rookie standout, Cooper DeJean, who made the Top 100. This secondary is only going to get stronger.
