Marlins' Sandy Alcantara Admits It Was 'Hard' Dealing with MLB Trade Deadline Rumors

Zach BacharAug 1, 2025

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara revealed that it was difficult to deal with trade rumors leading up to Thursday's deadline at 6 p.m. ET.

"It was hard, man," Alcantara said Friday, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "Every time I get on my phone, I see my name. I thought that I was leaving."

The 29-year-old ultimately remained with the Marlins beyond the deadline despite being linked to several teams including the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, New York Mets and San Diego Padres.

"It was a little hard because everywhere you go, every time you grab your phone, you see your name on the media," Alcantara said, via ESPN. "But you [can't] think too much about it. Just stay focused on everything you can do. I just came here, and if something happened, it just happened."

The veteran starter owns a 6-9 record in 21 starts this year to go along with a 6.36 ERA and 1.422 WHIP. It's worth noting that Alcantara missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Still, trade interest in the 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner seemed to be high. After all, Alcantara owned a career 3.32 ERA heading into his 2025 campaign with two All-Star nods under his belt.

He's also started to look like his former self as of late, recording eight strikeouts without allowing an earned run across 12 innings pitched over his past two starts.

Alcantara has two more years remaining on his contract as well, which includes a club option for the 2027 season.

While the Marlins sit seven games behind the final NL wild card spot with a 52-55 record, they chose to keep Alcantara.
