Red Sox Reportedly Offered 'Multiple' Top 100 MLB Prospects in Joe Ryan Trade Talks
The Boston Red Sox reportedly offered the Minnesota Twins "multiple" top-100 MLB prospects for starting pitcher Joe Ryan, per WEEI's Rob Bradford.
The Twins were heavy sellers prior to Thursday's trade deadline but didn't deal their staff ace in the 29-year-old Ryan, who enters Friday with a 10-5 record and 2.82 ERA over 21 appearances (20 starts). The 2025 American League All-Star has also struck out 137 batters in 121.1 innings.
The Red Sox have three prospects ranked in MLB.com's Top 100: shortstop/second baseman Franklin Arias (No. 33 overall), outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia (No. 88) and left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle (No. 92).
All were apparently on the table, per Bradford, as well as other Top 10 Red Sox prospects. Boston's farm system is notably loaded with infield and pitching talent (10 of the Red Sox's top 11 prospects are infielders or pitchers).
It's clear why the Red Sox wanted Ryan (or another controllable starter, like Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcántara, who Bradford referenced). Boston was looking for another No. 2 starter behind Garrett Crochet, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic on July 16.
They didn't get one, though. It's unclear why a deal didn't go down, although a report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today emerged that the Red Sox had been tough to deal with before the deadline.
The Red Sox did land a couple pitchers in right-handed Dustin May and left-hander Steven Matz. But it was a mostly quiet deadline for a team that's fighting for a wild card spot right now. Boston has been 16-6 dating back to the first half of the season, though, so perhaps the current roster can vault the team to the playoffs after a two-year absence.
