Astros Must Go AllIn on Dylan Cease Trade to Cement World Series Push amid MLB Rumors
The Houston Astros have done a great job managing their litany of starting pitching injuries in 2025.
However, if they want to compete for a World Series they need another power arm to work after Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown.
That's where Dylan Cease enters the picture. The San Diego Padres hurler is the best pitcher available for the Astros in terms of contract length and postseason experience.

Yankees Call Up Spencer Jones
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported on Wednesday that Cease is Houston's "main target"
Later on Wednesday, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported talks "cooled" between the Astros and Padres on Cease and that Sandy Alcantara was a target for Houston.
Cease still has to be the primary target for the Astros, though, especially after the Seattle Mariners landed Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Seattle and the Texas Rangers are both five games back of the Astros in the American League West.
Most of the other contenders in the AL already made moves. Even the Los Angeles Angels, nine games back of the Astros, dealt for a pair of relievers earlier this week.
Cease's season numbers are admittedly not great. He's 3-10 with a 4.79, but there were signs in the last month that he's starting to turn a corner.
The right-hander pushed into the sixth inning in three of his last five starts. He also produced 24 strikeouts and conceded seven earned runs across his last three appearances.
The strikeout stuff is clearly still there and a change of scenery might reinvigorate Cease.
Houston will have to pay a decent price to San Diego, but it won't be the largest prospect haul of trade season. Cease is an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
Joe Ryan and Sandy Alcantara, who are viewed as the other top starting pitchers on the trade block, are both under control for multiple years and would require a decent-sized return.
Houston could probably get away with dealing a pair of prospects for Cease due to his contract length.
Cease could just be a half-year rental because of all the starting pitchers on Houston's injured list. The Astros have a full rotation sidelined. Lance McCullers, Luis Garcia, Ronel Blanco, Spencer Arrighetti, Cristian Javier and J.P. France are all on the injured list.
Cease's potential arrival would give the Astros three solid starters for a playoff series in Cease, Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown. Any returns from the injured list would be viewed as a boost to the playoff rotation.
That trio would rival whichever combination of hurlers Toronto, the New York Yankees, Detroit or any AL West rivals could throw out in a postseason series.
The Astros have been no stranger to acquiring notable pitchers at the trade deadline in the last decade. A potential deal for Cease would solidify the rotation as the franchise makes yet another World Series push.
