Breanna Stewart Has No Timetable for Return to Liberty amid Knee Injury, HC Says

Zach BacharJul 30, 2025

New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart doesn't have a timetable regarding her return from a bone bruise in her right knee, according to Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello (via ESPN).

Stewart suffered the injury roughly three minutes into New York's 101-99 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night and hasn't played since.

She recorded three points and three rebounds while shooting 1-of-2 from the field before exiting the game.

Stewart appeared to avoid a serious knee issue after the contest, with Doug Feinberg of the Associated Press reporting that she underwent imaging and "nothing major turned up."

Brondello also told reporters Wednesday that despite Stewart's uncertain recovery timeline, the seven-time All-Star "escaped major injury" and the team just wants to make sure that she's "right for the playoffs."

New York could be taking a cautious approach with Stewart, as she underwent a minor surgery on her right knee in May.

The two-time MVP was in the midst of another strong individual season prior to the injury, averaging 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds to go along with 3.9 assists per game on 46.9 percent shooting.

Stewart also held her own defensively, recording 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on a nightly basis.

She's served as a crucial piece of a Liberty squad attempting to defend their 2024 championship this season, currently sitting at No. 2 in the WNBA standings with a 17-8 record.

Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones and Natasha Cloud will continue to handle larger offensive roles until Stewart is able to return.
